As a mom, it can be so hard to know what to feed your kids. Everyone wants their child(ren) to be healthy, but with all the new eating fads and tricky food marketing, making the healthiest choices can be challenging. The biggest thing for me is the ingredients. I have written a lot in the past about reading labels and how important healthy ingredients are, but it can be life changing. The easiest way to know whether you should purchase a product or not is the ingredients list. If there are words that you can’t pronounce, or the list is a mile long, you probably shouldn’t buy it. There have been a lot of studies done on toxic ingredients in food and how it can cause problems in children and their learning abilities. Here is a list of five ingredients I think you should avoid at all costs.

1. go to link Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame, also known as NutraSweet and Equal. It is found in foods labeled “diet” or “sugar free.” Aspartame is not your friend! It is a neurotoxin and carcinogen. It can gradually destroy intelligence and affect short-term memory as well as cause a variety of ailments (brain tumor, diseases like lymphoma, diabetes, Parkinson’s, depression, anxiety) The list goes on!

2. click here High Fructose Corn Syrup: This is a highly refined artificial sweetener. It is found in almost all processed foods (bread, candy, yogurt, salad dressing, canned vegetables, cereals). HFCS packs on the pounds faster than any other ingredient, increases LDL (“bad”) cholesterol level, contributes to diabetes and tissue damage.

3. Common food dyes: Studies show that artificial colorings which are found in soda, fruit juices, etc., may contribute to behavioral problems in children and lead to a significant reduction in IQ. It can also lead to cancer. Watch out for these: Blue #1 and Blue #2- This is banned in some countries and it causes chromosomal damage. Red #3 and Red #40- Has been proven to cause thyroid cancer and chromosomal damage, may interfere with brain-nerve damage. Yellow #6- Increases the number of kidney and adrenal gland tumors and causes chromosomal damage.

4. Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite: This is a preservative, coloring, and flavoring in bacon, hot dogs, lunch meats, corned beef, smoked fish, and other processed meats. This ingredient, which sounds harmless, is highly carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system.

5. BHA and BHT: Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are preservatives found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. This common preservative keeps foods from changing color, changing flavor, or becoming rancid. Affects the neurological system of the brain, alters behavior and has the potential to cause cancer.

This is just the tip of the ice-burg. There are hundreds of ingredients to avoid, but this is a start for you to be more aware of what you are feeding you and your kids. I know it can seem like a daunting task to take the extra time to research or read labels, but it’s in your best interest. Food is meant to fuel your body, not poison it. This doesn’t mean you can’t have the foods you love; it just means you must find healthier versions with healthier ingredients. Fad diets don’t work. They are short lived. That is why you must make a lifestyle change. Lifestyle changes are long term and a way of life. The first step is reading ingredients and learning how to keep toxic chemicals out of your food. It will make a huge difference in your life and the life of your children. Take care of the body you have because it’s the only one you get!
