Be You

I was reading an article and it made me think of fitness and health and how women define themselves by what they see in magazines and social media. That is why this article put a smile on my face, because the author said she’s not sorry for being who she is and she loves the body she has. As hard as it is at times, we all must love the skin we are in and stop comparing ourselves to other people. We were all made uniquely, so why are we always trying to be like someone else?
I have had conversations with people in the past where they jokingly say they wish they had the legs of this person or the arms of that person. This is why most people end up feeling so bad about themselves because they have unachievable goals. You will never have arms, legs, glutes, etc., like anyone else. It is physically impossible! We are designed to be different and not one of us is the same. Not just in looks, but in body composition: we gain and lose weight differently, our organs function differently, our metabolism works at different rates. This is why we all can’t do the same exercises and eat the same food. It doesn’t work that way. There are guidelines and we have to figure out what works best for US!

You are probably wondering how this topic is a workout tip. Well, like I have preached many times before, you have to be ok with YOU in order to reach your fitness goals. So much of fitness is mental. This is very hard for most people to understand, because weight loss and gain is physical, but our mind controls everything and our bodies react to the thoughts and feelings we have. If you are continuously putting yourself down, wishing you looked like someone else, hating what you see in the mirror, your body will respond accordingly. We thrive when we are positive, eating clean, and exercising. We plummet when we are negative, eating poorly, and sedentary.
I know this is easier said than done, but you have to start somewhere and that somewhere should be accepting who you are, no matter what you look like. Beauty comes in many shapes and sizes. There is not just one body type that is beautiful. We are all created uniquely for a reason and we need to let our uniqueness shine. The truth is, once you start taking care of yourself, you stop caring so much about how you look and begin to crave the amazing feeling you get from eating well and moving your body. If we can shift our focus to what really matters, our health and well-being, we will begin to live the life we were meant to live—full of love, gratefulness, and purpose.
