Where do I start if I have never exercised or it has been a very long time?

One of the most difficult elements of exercise is getting started. Knowing where to begin can feel daunting, so figure out what your goals are. Do you want to lose weight? Are you eager to become more active?  Regardless of what they are, you should start out slow with a low-impact, basic exercise routine. Your body has to get used to the new stress you are putting on it. If you start too hard and too fast, it can leave you feeling overexerted and may cause injury.

Write down your goals and post them where you can see them to keep you focused. Another good habit to get into is tracking your workouts on a calendar. Print out a few months and log in the workouts you do each day. This will keep you accountable, it’s a good motivator, and will help you see the progress you have made.

Remember to make attainable goals. If your goal is too difficult, you will not be successful. Start small and be specific about time of day, the activity, and where it will take place. For example, I will walk a half a mile, at 9 am, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This way you make it a standing appointment with yourself and it becomes a part of your daily routine. Start with only a few goals. By setting too many, (I want to become a runner, lift weights, stop eating sweets and drinking soda) you can become overwhelmed and not accomplish any of them. Stick to your one goal for a month. If you have accomplished that goal for a month, then you are ready to add another. Try not to beat yourself up if you start a program and it slowly tapers off. Just pick yourself up and start again. Find a positive motivator, a friend to work out with, small rewards after you work out, or a personal trainer. Once you transform your goals into habits, you will begin to feel the benefits of your efforts.
